Karate Hydration Education In Albany NY

We had the really special honor of presenting Gulpwater® to Shihan Butler's Karate Program for Pre K to 5th graders kindly arranged by the Albany Commissioner of Recreation, John D'Antonio.

It was a wonderful experience, each and every child learned and demonstrated the smart choice of drinking water for hydration...just like plants do.

The class was fabulous, these focused students all were excited and happy to learn how proper hydration is better for you (and your Karate) than soda.

Responsibly love your family


 

The world has changed forever.

An evil set of unthinkable actions (IMHO) by a seemingly irresponsible enabling mother and her mentally ill adult child extinguished 26 innocent and beautiful lives. It has deeply harmed the lives of each victim's family and friends forever. We all have been hurt, forever.

Children are today at risk from new dangerous factors that didn't exist in the past.

Bad ingredients in our soda might seem trivial - tonight we have been asked to give a free class to teach young kids to choose to gulp water instead of sugar and thus avoid one cause of possible lifelong sickness and dental disease.

We welcome the opportunity to help kids especially during this very difficult time. Please do your part.

Please hug your kids and responsibly care for your family, neighbors and friends.

Don't rely on thirst alone to tell you how much you need to drink. To keep those muscles working and avoid fatigue; it's extremely important to drink plenty of liquids before, during, and after the activity.

Drink Up -- Before, During and After

A good guideline to use when preparing for an outdoor workout, whether it's walking, running, biking, or tennis, is to drink about two cups of fluid two hours before the activity. That helps make sure you are well-hydrated before you ever go outdoors.
Then, during the activity, try to drink 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes to keep your muscles well-hydrated. If you are planning an hour-long walk or gym workout, fill a water bottle with about 16 ounces (2 cups) and take it with you.
Last, drink up after you're finished with your exercise. If you really want to be precise, weigh yourself before you start exercising and again when you are finished. For each pound of water weight you lose, drink 20 ounces of fluid.

A good place to start is with about eight cups (8 oz) of water and other water based beverages each day. Take note of how you feel, are you thirsty? What is the frequency of urination? And is your urine color too yellow?
If you answered yes to these questions boost your fluid intake. Guidelines recommend the amount of fluid you need depends on your body, so assessing your intake and how it affects your body is the best place to begin the determination of how much you need.
These guidelines are for adequate hydration so more fluids are needed during physical activity or with weather extremes. As temperatures deviate from the ideal temperature for body functions—too hot or too cold—the amount of fluid needed increases. More fluids are needed during pregnancy and lactation or when sick with a fever, diarrhea or vomiting.
While all fluids count towards your daily need not all fluids are equal in terms of calories or sometimes in terms of nutrition. Water is the best choice for hydration since it supplies no calories, no caffeine, (a stimulant) and it has no sodium or fat. Milk and 100 percent fruit juice are next best choices since they offer a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. They do contribute calories so they shouldn’t be the major source of all your fluid needs.

  • Take count of your fluid intake to determine what you need
  • Compare calorie versus noncalorie beverages to determine if calorie beverages need to be reduced

    There’s something about drinking crisp, cold water that makes it much more refreshing to drink. No matter the weather, a glass of ice water always seems to hit the spot.
  • Make tea or drink mixes.
    Drinking tea is a tasty way of weaning yourself away from caffeine (in case that was another of your resolutions). You can either brew it or use packets of flavored tea mixes. Other mixed drinks like Kool-Aid are inexpensive and better still, kids love them! They also contain far less sugar than sodas, providing a healthier alternative for yourself and your family.
  • Add a touch of something.
    Slipping in a slice of lemon can add some zest to your water. (And it’s good for digestion, too!) If you’re not a fan of sour flavors, most any citrus fruits (like oranges) can give your drinking water that extra zing. Another healthy tip is to add a few slices of cucumber to give your water a pleasing aroma along with an energizing flavor.
  • Enjoy a mini smoothie!
    Crush some sweet fruit like strawberries at the bottom of your glass before giving your water a pour. Mix it up with a straw to experience a healthy, inexpensive smoothie! You’ll get your fix for something sweet along with a texture that’s satisfying.

Hepatic Steatosis is a medical term for a fatty liver, a condition in which there is an abnormal and excessive build up of fat in the cells of the liver. When the fat in the liver accounts for more than 10% of the liver’s weight, then it is called "hepatic steatosis" and this condition could lead to more serious complications for the patient.
Most people know that alcoholics develop liver damage as a consequence of chronic alcohol consumption. But not all fatty, inflamed livers are caused by excessive alcohol consumption. It’s estimated that over one third of Americans suffer from fatty liver disease that is unrelated to alcohol consumption. That’s over 60 million people.
This type of liver disease is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and it’s a concern because just like the type that alcoholics get, NAFLD can lead to an inflamed liver, a disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH, and set the sufferer up for a higher risk of liver cancer.
Worse, a fatty liver produces no symptoms on its own, so people often only learn about their fatty liver when they have medical tests for other reasons.

What Does Your Liver Do For You?

The liver is the largest organ in the body. It is found high in the right upper abdomen, behind the ribs. It is a very complex organ and it has a serious impact on your health because if performs many important functions, such as:
  • Storing energy in the form of glycogen
  • Storing vitamins, iron, and other minerals needed for good health
  • Making proteins, including blood clotting factors, which help with growth and body health
  • Breaking down worn out red blood cells and cleansing the blood
  • Making bile needed for the digestion of fats from the diet
  • Metabolizing medications and alcohol
  • Killing germs that enter the body through the intestines.
The liver takes on the majority of body maintenance tasks and it even has a remarkable power to regenerate itself. Keeping your liver healthy is a very important goal!

What Causes Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?

There are many different causes for NAFLD. Most sites, including the American Liver Foundation, mention elevated triglycerides, but they don't tell you what to do.
So then, what causes elevated triglycerides? As it turns out, a diet high in carbohydrates, especially a diet high in fructose, has been shown to elevate triglyceride levels, and as a consequence, worsen NAFLD. Here's a study which demonstrates the effect of fructose.
On average, Americans eat about 75 pounds of fructose per year, mostly in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS is added to just about every processed food, and it’s in foods that you wouldn’t suspect, including artificial crabmeat, soups, and other supposedly non-sweet foods.
Study after study has shown that fructose elevates blood pressure, triglyceride levels and increases inflammation in the liver. Fructose is metabolized exclusively in the liver, and a diet high in fructose damages the liver and makes it insulin resistant. This includes the fructose found natural foods such as fruit and honey.

The Institute of Medicine — an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1970 as part of the National Academies, which dates to the late 1800s — admits in published materials that the “8 by 8” rule of eight, eight glasses, 8 ounces a day of water isn’t supported by hard evidence, but it’s easy to remember and drives home the idea that hydration is critical for good health.
Further, “water” can include all fluids.
In fact, what you eat can provide a portion of what the body needs. Food actually provides about 20 percent of your water intake. Fruits and vegetables, particularly watermelon and tomatoes, are 90 percent water anyway.
Beverages such as milk and juice are also mostly water.
That said, the institute actually recommends that men drink 13 cups of fluid a day and women 9 cups.
How do you know that you’re getting enough? You should rarely feel thirsty and you should produce about a liter and a half of colorless or light yellow urine a day.

Hydration drinks

Water: Tap water still does the trick. If you are exercising for longer than an hour, you can drink fruit juice diluted with water. Water is still the cheapest, best and most plentiful source of staying hydrated.
Gatorade: Drinks such as Gatorade, Powerade and All Sport can supply an energy boost, rapidly replace spent carbs and electrolytes and increase the glucose in your blood for runs and workouts longer than a half hour. Choose the right drink for you by reading the label: Ideally, the drink will provide about 14 grams of carbs, 28 milligrams of potassium and 100 milligrams of sodium per 8-ounce serving. Worried about added calories? Dilute with water or pour it into a vacuum bottle packed with ice.
Fitness waters: Fluids such as Propel fall between sports drinks and plain water. They have fewer calories and electrolytes than sports drinks but offer more taste than water.
Designer bottled water: Many of these are advertised as being enhanced with vitamins, oxygen and glucose. But the FDA does not require proof for these claims, so think of them as simple hydration options and nothing else.
Energy drinks: Caffeine and sugar can boost performance, but the sugar here is so high that it is not a good idea during exercise. Stimulants in these drinks can increase your blood pressure and make you feel shaky.

Abstract

While virtually absent in our diet a few hundred years ago, fructose has now become a major constituent of our modern diet. Our main sources of fructose are sucrose from beet or cane, high fructose corn syrup, fruits, and honey. Fructose has the same chemical formula as glucose (C6H12O6), but its metabolism differs markedly from that of glucose due to its almost complete hepatic extraction and rapid hepatic conversion into glucose, glycogen, lactate, and fat. Fructose was initially thought to be advisable for patients with diabetes due to its low glycemic index. However, chronically high consumption of fructose in rodents leads to hepatic and extrahepatic insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and high blood pressure.

Americans are being poisoned by a common additive present in a wide array of processed foods like soft drinks and salad dressings, commercially made cakes and cookies, and breakfast cereals and brand-name breads.
This commonplace additive silently increases our risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.
The name of this toxic additive is high-fructose corn syrup. It is so ubiquitous in processed foods and so over-consumed by the average American that many experts believe our nation faces the prospect of an epidemic of metabolic disease in the future, related in significant degree to excess consumption of high-fructose corn syrup.
The food industry has long known that “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in the most delightful way.” And cane sugar had been America’s most delightful sweetener of choice, that is, until the 1970s, when the much less expensive corn-derived sweeteners like maltodextrin and high-fructose corn syrup were developed. While regular table sugar (sucrose) is 50% fructose and 50% glucose, high-fructose corn syrup can contain up to 80% fructose and 20% glucose, almost twice the fructose of common table sugar. Both table sugar and high-fructose sweetener contain four calories per gram, so calories alone are not the key problem with high-fructose corn syrup. Rather, metabolism of excess amounts of fructose is the major concern.

Corn Syrup Fructose vs. Water Hydration

Different sugars may have different effects on the body; advocates seek labeling

Just as recent science has divided dietary fats into good, bad and really bad categories, some scientists now think different sugars also may deserve individual scrutiny.
Most experts agree that Americans eat too much sugar, period. But studies in recent years suggest that a simple sugar called fructose might contribute in unique ways to pre-diabetic conditions, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
Fructose, which makes up about half of table sugar and standard high-fructose corn syrup, is metabolized solely by the liver. The other major simple sugar, glucose, can be used by all organs. Researchers are finding that bombarding the liver with high levels of fructose can produce excess internal fat and elevate levels of uric acid, effects that can contribute to insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. Some animal studies also link fructose to reduced sensitivity to leptin, a hormone that signals the body to stop eating.

Another reason to avoid foods made with a lot of sugar.
The human body handles glucose and fructose — the most abundant sugars in our diet — in different ways. Virtually every cell in the body can break down glucose for energy. About the only ones that can handle fructose are liver cells. What the liver does with fructose, especially when there is too much in the diet, has potentially dangerous consequences for the liver, the arteries, and the heart.
Fructose, also called fruit sugar, was once a minor part of our diet. In the early 1900s, the average American took in about 15 grams of fructose a day (about half an ounce), most of it from eating fruits and vegetables. Today we average four or five times that amount, almost all of it from the refined sugars used to make breakfast cereals, pastries, sodas, fruit drinks, and other sweet foods and beverages.
Refined sugar, called sucrose, is half glucose and half fructose. High-fructose corn syrup is about 55% fructose and 45% glucose.

From fructose to fat

The entry of fructose into the liver kicks off a series of complex chemical transformations. (You can see a diagram of these at health.harvard.edu/172.) One remarkable change is that the liver uses fructose, a carbohydrate, to create fat. This process is called lipogenesis. Give the liver enough fructose, and tiny fat droplets begin to accumulate in liver cells (see figure). This buildup is called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, because it looks just like what happens in the livers of people who drink too much alcohol.
Virtually unknown before 1980, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease now affects up to 30% of adults in the United States and other developed countries, and between 70% and 90% of those who are obese or who have diabetes.
Early on, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is reversible. At some point, though, the liver can become inflamed. This can cause the low-grade damage known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (steato meaning fat and hepatitis meaning liver inflammation). If the inflammation becomes severe, it can lead to cirrhosis — an accumulation of scar tissue and the subsequent degeneration of liver function.

Beyond the liver

The breakdown of fructose in the liver does more than lead to the buildup of fat. It also:
  • elevates triglycerides
  • increases harmful LDL (so-called bad cholesterol)
  • promotes the buildup of fat around organs (visceral fat)
  • increases blood pressure
  • makes tissues insulin-resistant, a precursor to diabetes
  • increases the production of free radicals, energetic compounds that can damage DNA and cells.
None of these changes are good for the arteries and the heart.

Virtually every cell in the body can use glucose for energy. In contrast, only liver cells break down fructose. What happens to fructose inside liver cells is complicated. One of the end products is triglyceride, a form of fat. Uric acid and free radicals are also formed.

None of this is good. Triglycerides can build up in liver cells and damage liver function. Triglycerides released into the bloodstream can contribute to the growth of fat-filled plaque inside artery walls. Free radicals (also called reactive oxygen species) can damage cell structures, enzymes, and even genes. Uric acid can turn off production of nitric oxide, a substance that helps protect artery walls from damage. Another effect of high fructose intake is insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.

Fructose, Fatty Acids and NAFLD

A Calorie is Not a Calorie

Glucose is the form of energy you were designed to run on. Every cell in your body, every bacterium -- and in fact, every living thing on the Earth--uses glucose for energy.
If you received your fructose only from vegetables and fruits (where it originates) as most people did a century ago, you'd consume about 15 grams per day -- a far cry from the 73 grams per day the typical adolescent gets from sweetened drinks. In vegetables and fruits, it's mixed in with fiber, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and beneficial phytonutrients, all which moderate any negative metabolic effects.
It isn't that fructose itself is bad -- it is the MASSIVE DOSES you're exposed to that make it dangerous. There are two reasons fructose is so damaging:
  1. Your body metabolizes fructose in a much different way than glucose. The entire burden of metabolizing fructose falls on your liver.
  2. People are consuming fructose in enormous quantities, which has made the negative effects much more profound.
Today, 55 percent of sweeteners used in food and beverage manufacturing are made from corn, and the number one source of calories in America is soda, in the form of HFCS.
Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that HFCS was not only far cheaper to make, it's about 20% sweeter than table sugar. HFCS is either 42% or 55% fructose, and sucrose is 50% fructose, so it's really a wash in terms of sweetness.
Still, this switch drastically altered the average American diet.
By USDA estimates, about one-quarter of the calories consumed by the average American is in the form of added sugars, and most of that is HFCS. The average Westerner consumes a staggering 142 pounds a year of sugar! And the very products most people rely on to lose weight -- the low-fat diet foods -- are often the ones highest in fructose. Making matters worse, all of the fiber has been removed from these processed foods, so there is essentially no nutritive value at all.

Fructose Metabolism Basics

Without getting into the very complex biochemistry of carbohydrate metabolism, it is important to understand some differences about how your body handles glucose versus fructose. I will be publishing a major article about this in the next couple of months, which will get much more into the details, but for our purpose here, I will just summarize the main points.
Dr. Robert Lustig[i] Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, has been a pioneer in decoding sugar metabolism. His work has highlighted some major differences in how different sugars are broken down and used:
  • After eating fructose, 100 percent of the metabolic burden rests on your liver. But with glucose, your liver has to break down only 20 percent.
  • Every cell in your body, including your brain, utilizes glucose. Therefore, much of it is "burned up" immediately after you consume it. By contrast, fructose is turned into free fatty acids (FFAs), VLDL (the damaging form of cholesterol), and triglycerides, which get stored as fat.
  • The fatty acids created during fructose metabolism accumulate as fat droplets in your liver and skeletal muscle tissues, causing insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Insulin resistance progresses to metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes.
  • Fructose is the most lipophilic carbohydrate. In other words, fructose converts to activated glycerol (g-3-p), which is directly used to turn FFAs into triglycerides. The more g-3-p you have, the more fat you store. Glucose does not do this.
  • When you eat 120 calories of glucose, less than one calorie is stored as fat. 120 calories of fructose results in 40 calories being stored as fat. Consuming fructose is essentially consuming fat!
  • The metabolism of fructose by your liver creates a long list of waste products and toxins, including a large amount of uric acid, which drives up blood pressure and causes gout.
  • Glucose suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin and stimulates leptin, which suppresses your appetite. Fructose has no effect on ghrelin and interferes with your brain's communication with leptin, resulting in overeating.
If anyone tries to tell you "sugar is sugar," they are way behind the times. As you can see, there are major differences in how your body processes each one.The bottom line is: fructose leads to increased belly fat, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome -- not to mention the long list of chronic diseases that directly result. And eating sugar may accelerate the aging process itself.

Dehydration Risk












It is a simple truth like "don't play in traffic" or "don't touch that it's hot"  If you don't consume enough water, you risk dehydration - you need to consume any type of clean water (bottled, tap, hot, warm, room temperature or cold) to be properly hydrated.

Dehydration in Adults Overview

Dehydration is a condition that occurs when the loss of body fluids, mostly water, exceeds the amount that is taken in. With dehydration, more water is moving out of our cells and then out of our bodies than the amount of water we take in through drinking.
We lose water every day in the form of water vapor in the breath we exhale and as water in our sweat, urine, and stool. Along with the water, small amounts of salts are also lost.

When we lose too much water, our bodies may become out of balance or dehydrated. Severe dehydration can lead to death.

Causes of Dehydration in Adults

Many conditions may cause rapid and continued fluid losses and lead to dehydration:
  • Fever, heat exposure, and too much exercise
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, and increased urination due to infection
  • Diseases such as diabetes
  • The inability to seek appropriate water and food (as in the case of an infant or disabled person)
  • An impaired ability to drink (for instance someone in a coma or on a respirator or a sick infant who cannot suck on a bottle)
  • No access to safe drinking water
  • Significant injuries to skin, such as burns or mouth sores, or severe skin diseases or infections (water is lost through the damaged skin)

Symptoms of Dehydration in Adults

The signs and symptoms of dehydration range from minor to severe and include:
  • Increased thirst
  • Dry mouth and swollen tongue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations (feeling that the heart is jumping or pounding)
  • Confusion
  • Sluggishness fainting
  • Fainting
  • Inability to sweat
  • Decreased urine output
Urine color may indicate dehydration. If urine is concentrated and deeply yellow or amber, you may be dehydrated.

When to Seek Medical Care

Call your doctor if the dehydrated person experiences any of the following:
  • Increased or constant vomiting for more than a day
  • Fever over 101°F
  • Diarrhea for more than 2 days
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased urine production
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
Take the person to the hospital's emergency department if these situations occur:
  • Fever higher than 103°F
  • Confusion
  • Sluggishness (lethargy)
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or abdominal pains
  • Fainting
  • No urine in the last 12 hours
